Through at the centuries, Chinese craftsmen designed and built some of the world's most refined and elegant chairs. Unlike in the West, for most of its history, the chair was an object of status, not ordinary use. Until the Tang dynasty, Chinese mostly sat on mats on the floor or heated kangs in the north. During Tang dynasty, the chair finaly arrived as part of the influx of cultures on the Silk Road. The first chairs were portable folding stools adapted to the nomadic lifestyle. From this humble stool grew a stationary, elevated platform with a high back. Chairs for formal use first emerged among the elite and soon spread to the rest of China. By the twelfth century few Chinese sat on the floor, and the era of the Chinese chair had begun.
Chine Gallery's exhibition will feature chairs representing the different stages of its eveolution, as well as the many different sytles and approaches developed in China to the art of sitting. The chairs will be presented to the public in the form of a fashion parade, on a raised platform bisecting its Hollywood Road showroom. Please click here for more information.
