This exhibition featured a collection of furniture made in different regions of China in the first half of the 20th century which show the influence of western design trends such as Art Deco. The furniture was made by Chinese craftsmen for wealthy Chinese and foreign merchants and traders, mainly during the hedonistic decades of the twenties and thirties when contemporary style in dress, architecture and home decor was all-important. Western architectural influences were seen, especially in the treaty ports of Shanghai, Amoy, Canton and Ningbo. The number of pieces which remain in good condition is limited. |
