Carpets have been used in inner Mongolia for over 700 years as floor and wall coverings, prayer rugs, sleeping rugs and saddle rugs. The average number of knots per square metre in Mongolian carpets is 78,000 - a much tighter weave than in carpets from Ningxia, for example. Many of the carpets bear a motif of a horse or a deer standing under a tree while others use geometric designs such as the endless knot. The much hankered after "blue on blue" rugs are woven from wool died in varying shades of blue. These rugs are still relatively underpriced so now is a good time to start building a collection. |
