Tigers And tiger skins have always figured prominently in Buddhist thangkas (paintings) and sculptures. During the seventh century, Tibetan officials sat on tiger skins and draped the skins around their bodies. The tiger symbolised high status, ferocity and bravery and only those in power and authority such as lawmakers and judges were allowed to own and use tiger rugs. A superb collection of tiger rugs together with some specially selected pieces of furniture was exhibited by Chine Gallery during the Year of the Tiger. |
