Chine Gallery takes deep pleasure in inviting you to view our latest exhibition, A Passion for Collecting. We take as our theme the studio of the traditional Chinese scholarly class, or literati. For centuries collecting, the study of the Confucian Classics, and reverence for the past were intertwined. The literati assembled decorative objects and furnishings to induce a proper frame of mind as they wrote elegant essays or dabbled at painting and calligraphy. In their approach to life and art, they were the ultimate dilettantes, mixing whimsy with serious pursuits of statecraft.
Our exhibition recreates the intimate world of a scholar's studio, with its typical furnishings of writing desk, painter's table, chairs, bookshelves, and display cabinets, together with the decorative objects a scholar would have chosen to stimulate the imagination. Present-day collectors, too, may view these objects with pleasure even if the context has changed - bamboo brush pots; root carvings, ceramics; cinnabar boxes; miniature wooden furniture; and scholar's rocks.
Come join us for a stimulating and enjoyable evening with friends.
