China has long been regonized for the genius of its sculptors. Some of the oldest records of its civilization are transmitted through the shaping of stone. It is an elemental art - it is the earth transformed.
Although stone carvers were, for the most part, anonymous artisans, they were nonetheless masters of the material and their craft. Hard of soft, the smoothest nephrite or crumbly volcanic rock, stone became a sublimely expressive medium in their hands. This exhibition featurees over 200 sculptures, all excellent examples of this skill. When formed into sculptures of Buddhas, bodhisattvas or luohans, sublime smiles and tranquil expressions inspire us, and the curves of gently falling robes suggest the softest of cloth.
Stone sculptures transcent the transience of time and tell of ages past. Their weathered surfaces, sometimes smoothed, sometimes pitted, remind us of China's long and noble history. The most durable of arts, stone temptations continue to intrigue and inspire.
