Chine Gallery's autumn exhibition 2004 takes you on a guided tour of traditional Chinese wedding customs. In China, unlike in the West, the colour red is central to weddings, and wedding furniture is a very important part of Chinese culture and traditions. Red signifies love, happiness and prosperity, so it¡¦s used in everything from the wedding gown to the interior decor.
Everlasting Romance features over 200 fine examples of elegant Chinese wedding furniture, most in red lacquer, dating from the 17th to the 19th centuries. On show will be wedding cabinets, chests, chairs, beds and benches, all arrayed in three areas ¡V a reception area, a living room and a bedroom ¡V to emulate typical traditional Chinese wedding interiors.
