For centuries, China has been one of the world's leading civilisations, and a land blessed with all kinds of spiritual deities. Religious belief was an essential element in many peopleˇ¦s lives, and these religious sculptures were meant to be worshipped and honoured, to create a spiritual feeling and to provide an opportunity for people to gain merit and blessings.
We have journeyed far and wide across the plains and steppes of China for several years to seek prime examples of such sculptures. Each of the treasures on show has its own characteristics and historical value, backed by a fascinating legend. So an understanding of the beliefs that the sculptures embody helps a great deal in appreciating them, not only as a works of art but also as images rich in spiritual feeling.
